with magic and voodoo and mardi gras queens

a strange combination of african beats

met with brass bands on the Nawlins Streets

Jelly Roll and Buddy Bolden didn't play it straight.

they used improvisation to make Jazz great.

Then there was Louis the man called Satchmo

And as his band leader, Fate, would have it, he let that music flow

Now Fess may be the heart, of this music loving town

But the music business kind of let him down

HE only had a few singles, none that were the best.

But he got rediscovered and went on to play Jazz Fest.  

All this is a prelude, for what came next.

So here comes the part I really like the best.

Cuz a sound oh so different came groovin thru the town

The godfather of soul, Mr James Brown.

Now New Orleans was bumping.. all sorts of music thumpin

Here's a little story.. that really was something:

Out at Poodle's Patio, Suzanne Robins is the show

Mac Rebennack would come on after, and let the party roll

Dr. John was a personna he made up for Ronnie Barron

But Ronnie didn't want it, he wasn’t really carin.. 

Bands couldn't be mixed of folks black and white, 

James Booker and the Doctor tried to make things right

They's switched musicians  - in and out their bands

And started funkin it up - wherever they can.

Now the DA Garrison had an eye for Suzanne

But when she turned him down, he threw her in the can.

And Poodle's became the first place - of many at the time

To get shut down by the vice squad - for getting out of line.

Right down the block, over at Ivanhoe's

The Funky Meters formed - every night there was a show

George and Leo, Zigaboo and Art.

They was making New Orleans funk with instrumental parts.

Now K-Doe's another story. I caught him at Jazz fest

A wild man on stage. As good as the best.

I Took my mom to see his place, the old mother in law lounge

Now its owned by Kermit, since the K-doe's aint around.

Down on Frenchman Street or St. Claude Avenue

Loved me some Chocolate Milk, Soul Rebels are fantastic.

But I think my alltime favorites are Rebirth, and Galactic.
