Band ideas

An optional shared scratchpad for sketching new material together: sessions, takes, and turning ideas into songs.

Most bands bring songs in already written. Some also sketch new material together: jamming riffs, trying a chorus, recording rough takes at rehearsal. Band ideas is a shared scratchpad for that. Every member of the band can hear and work with the takes.

Ideas are mainly a personal tool. If you're capturing your own riffs and voice memos, use Ideas in your profile. You can share a finished song with the band later.

Who can do what: by default the Principal, Core and Member roles can record ideas and turn them into songs. Everyone in the band can listen.

Find band ideas

Open the Recordings panel in your band's sidebar and click View all Idea recordings.

Ideas organize themselves into sessions, one per day (5 am to 5 am), so a rehearsal's takes all land together without anyone filing them. Each session card shows how many takes it has, plus any starred takes and groups. Click Open session to work in it, and All sessions to get back to the cards. All ideas shows every take as a grid of cards, with who recorded each one.

Band ideas don't have the search, filters, voice-memo import or moving takes between sessions that your profile ideas have.

Record a take

Click New Idea, or open a session and use the Record panel on the right:

  • Record audio or Record video, then Stop & save. The take appears in the session straight away.
  • Upload file adds a recording you already have.

When you stop a take, a Name it box gives you 8 seconds to say the name (Tap to speak) or type it. Otherwise the take gets a placeholder name; click it later to rename it, or use the mic button to say the name. Naming takes, sessions and groups as you go makes them much easier for the whole band to find later.

Organize a session

  • Name the session at the top (for example, "First takes of the new chorus").
  • Star the takes you like.
  • Group takes that belong together, like different parts or versions of an idea. Drag one take onto another to make a group, or click New group and drag takes into it. Click a group's name to rename it. The trash button deletes a group and leaves its takes in the session, ungrouped.

The idea page

Click a take to open it. You can play or Download it, add Notes (lyrics scraps, capo, reminders; the mic appends spoken notes), and use Copy Share Link to let someone without an account listen. Videos can be converted to MP4 with Save Disk Space.

Turn an idea into a song

When an idea becomes a real song, click Create This Song on its page and check the title. The song is added to your repertoire and the take becomes its first recording, so you can trim it, normalize it, use it in setlists or put it on an album. See Recording songs.

If the band already has a song with a similar title, you're asked whether to create a new song or add the take to that one.

Move or delete takes

  • To my profile moves a take you recorded out of the band and into your own profile ideas. It isn't offered once the take has become a song.
  • Delete removes a take. You can delete your own takes; Core and Principal members can delete anyone's. Deleting a take that's become a song keeps the recording with the song.

Idea recordings count toward the storage of the member who recorded them.
