Your band's songs

Adding songs

Every way to add songs to your band: one at a time, pasted or photographed lists, Google Docs and Sheets, and the library.

Your band's repertoire is the list of songs the band plays. Adding a song to it also links it to The Band Plan's shared song library. If the song is already in the library, your band gets the charts and links other musicians have added. If it isn't, a new library song is created. On a paid plan you can mark a new song private, so only you can use it in the library.

Who can add songs: by default the Principal, Core and Member roles. Manager, Crew and Sub can't.

The band page has panels for each way in: Pick Songs, Add Song and Quick Set Creation. A band with no songs yet sees a larger set of starter panels instead.

Add one song

  1. Click Add New Song in the Add Song panel.
  2. Enter the Song Title (the only required field). Optionally add Artist, Vocalist, Key, Duration, BPM, Genre and tags.
  3. Optionally add a chart (chords, lyrics, tabs or a PDF lead sheet; type it, upload a PDF, or import a Google Doc) and a link (YouTube, audio and so on).
  4. Click Add Song.

If a song with that title already exists, you'll see the matches marked Exact Match or Similar. Pick one to reuse it, or create a new song. You land on the new band song page.

Paste a list

Use Quick Set Creation on the band page, or Add a List of Songs on the Add a song page for a bigger box.

  1. Choose Setlist + repertoire (also builds a setlist) or Repertoire only. On the band page these are Create Setlist and Repertoire Only.
  2. Paste or type your songs.
  3. Click Confirm your list (Process on the band page).

You don't need a special format. We read the list for you, so a gig setlist, a jam wish list, notes, or rows copied from a spreadsheet all work:

  • Artists are picked up when the line has one (Superstition, Stevie Wonder or Superstition - Stevie Wonder). We don't guess missing artists.
  • Segues like Help on the Way > Slipknot! or A/B become separate songs.
  • Headings like Set 2 or Encore start a new set, and so do blank lines.
  • Vocalist marks, keys, tempos and short notes come along when they're there.

You can add up to 300 songs at a time. Nothing is saved until you finish the confirm page.

Scan a photo of your list

Got a handwritten or printed setlist? On the list page, click Scan a photo of your list and choose a JPEG, PNG, WebP or HEIC image. The song titles are read from the photo and put in the text box for you to check. The photo itself isn't stored.

Import from Google Docs or Sheets

Click Upload Songs from Google Docs on the Add a song page, or Google Doc on the list page. Every doc or sheet must be shared as Anyone with the link can view.

  • One document, many songs: one Google Doc with each title in a Heading style, or a page break between songs and the title at the top of each page. What follows each title becomes that song's chart.
  • A Google Sheet: one row per song, with a Song or Title column. Artist, Vocalist, BPM, Duration, Key and Genre columns are picked up. Chords or Lyrics columns become the song's chart, and links in any column are added to the song.
  • One song per document: one Google Doc link per line. Choose Keep Google Docs as source of truth (the chart stays linked to your doc, so edits there show here) or Import into The Band Plan (the content is copied and you edit it here from then on).

Click Process documents. See Google Doc formatting for the details.

The confirm page

Pasting, scanning and importing all end here. The top shows how many songs we read and how many we already know, how many to check, and how many are new. You can either:

  • Review the songs below first, or
  • accept everything as it is with Just add them (or Take me to the setlist when you're building one).

Each song is marked:

  • Matched: we know this song. It's linked to the existing one.
  • Check: we found something similar. If it's the same song, pick it; otherwise it goes in as new.
  • New: a new song will be created.

Click Change to see the choices. Pick an existing song, or Create New to fix the title and add an artist (and, on a paid plan, make it private). Songs already in your repertoire are marked.

Use ✓ to add a song right away, or ✗ to leave it out. When you're done, click Add Songs to Band Repertoire, or Go to Setlist if you're building a setlist. Set the setlist's name and date at the bottom first.

Pick from the library

Click Browse catalog in the band page's Pick Songs panel, or Pick Songs on the Add a song page. Tap a song to add it, and tap again to remove it. Changes save instantly. You can also browse songs from your bandmates' own collections here.

Other places to add songs

  • On a song's page: click Add to my bands and choose the bands.
  • While editing a setlist: in the Band songs column, type in Search or add a song and choose Library (add to band). See Creating setlists.
  • When recording: in Quick Record, choose Record New Song, enter a title, and record. The song is added to the repertoire. See Recording songs.

Not for a band?

  • Your own collection: your profile has the same options (one song, a list, Google Docs, or picking from the library), but songs go into your personal collection instead of a band. See Your song collection.
  • The library only: Add a song and Bulk add on the Songs page add songs to the shared library without putting them in any band or collection. See Collecting songs.
