Band recordings

External recordings

Bringing in recordings made outside The Band Plan.

Not everything gets recorded in the browser. Here's how to bring in recordings made on a Zoom recorder, in a DAW, on someone's phone, or already posted online.

Files on your computer

Recorded on a dedicated recorder, a phone app or in a DAW? Upload the files to the setlist: Add and Manage Recordings, then Upload Recording. Most audio and video formats work, up to 4.5 GB each, and you can upload a whole set or one file per song. Then split the set, or assign each file to a song.

See Uploading setlist recordings.

Files in the cloud

On the setlist's recordings page, Import from URL brings in a file from a direct link to the audio or video file, up to 500 MB. iCloud share links work. Links to ordinary web pages won't, because there's no file to download.

YouTube

Paste a YouTube link into Import from URL. The video isn't downloaded; it's saved as a YouTube embed, named after the video, and goes straight into the setlist's video player. You can't split or trim a YouTube recording.

A single song

To add a recording of one song rather than a set, use Import Recording on the song's page. See Recording songs.

A player page hosted somewhere else

If your recordings already live on a website that lists them as links to audio files, you can point the setlist at that page instead of uploading anything:

  1. On the setlist page, find External Set Recordings.
  2. Paste the page's address and click Save.
  3. Listen to the Set opens a player built from the audio files linked on that page; Copy Link copies a share link to it.

This only works with pages that link straight to MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A or FLAC files. Streaming pages like YouTube, SoundCloud, Spotify or Bandcamp won't produce a player. The files stay on the other site: nothing is copied to The Band Plan, so you can't split, trim or make an album from them. To do that, download the files and upload them instead.

Saving, changing or removing the link needs permission to edit setlists (by default Principal and Core). Once a link is saved, those members see Change link and Remove under the buttons. Removing it stops Listen to the Set and any copied listen links from working until you save a new one.

The link has to be a public web page. Addresses on a private or home network (like localhost or 192.168.…) are refused, and pages larger than 5 MB won't load.

Album tracks

When building an album, a track's audio can also come from Enter URL (a direct link to an audio file) or Upload File. See Making albums.
