The Woodshed

Browse lesson videos and links, save them for later, and add your own.

The Woodshed (/woodshed) is a shared shelf of lessons: tutorial videos, riffs, grooves and technique resources that musicians have found useful. Anyone can browse and watch. Sign in to save lessons for later or add your own.

To get there, click Community in the top bar and pick The Woodshed. New lessons also show up in the From the Woodshed row of the What's new carousel on the home page.

Three tabs

  • Riffs & Grooves: YouTube lessons that aren't tied to one song, like a funk strumming pattern, a shuffle feel or a scale workout.
  • Songs: lessons for a specific song in the library. This includes Woodshed videos linked to a song, plus any guitar, bass or keyboard tutorial links people have added on the song's page.
  • Links: lessons from outside YouTube, such as Facebook, Vimeo, Instagram, TikTok or SoundCloud.

Filter the list

Use the Filters panel on the left. The choices change with the tab:

  • Riffs & Grooves: genre, instrument, difficulty (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) and YouTube channel.
  • Songs: pick a song, or filter by genre, instrument or YouTube channel. Click Apply after choosing a channel. The channel filter only covers Woodshed videos, so song-page tutorial links drop out when you use it.
  • Links: platform.

Clear filters resets the tab. The count next to Filters shows how many lessons match.

Watch a lesson

Click a card to open it:

  • YouTube lessons open on their own page with the video, any notes from the person who added it, and who added it. If the lesson is for a song, click the song's name to go to its page.
  • Song tutorial links open on the song's link page, with a Back to The Woodshed button.
  • Links open the original site in a new tab.

The video player has the same practice tools as a chart's media panel: click Show controls to skip back or forward, loop a section between two points, or slow it down. See Play along with the media panel. Videos start over when they reach the end, so you can keep playing along.

Save lessons for later

Signed in, click Save (the bookmark) on a card, or Save to profile on a lesson's page. Click it again to remove it. Saved lessons collect in My Woodshed, which you can reach from your profile or the My Woodshed tile on your home page.

You can save YouTube lessons and Links. Song tutorial links on the Songs tab don't have a Save button; find them again from the song's page.

If you're not signed in, Save to profile asks you to sign in first, then brings you back.

Add a lesson

Sign in, then use the buttons at the top of the Woodshed:

Add YouTube is for YouTube videos. Paste a watch, youtu.be, Shorts or Live link. The title and channel come from YouTube automatically. You can also add:

  • a genre, instrument and difficulty,
  • notes, like what to focus on or a timestamp,
  • Link to a Song: search the library to put the lesson on the Songs tab. Leave it blank and it goes in Riffs & Grooves.

Add link is for anything that isn't YouTube. Paste the URL and add the same optional details. YouTube links are turned away here; use Add YouTube for those.

A few things get turned away:

  • A video or link that's already in the Woodshed.
  • A private or removed YouTube video, because its details can't be loaded.
  • A link that clearly isn't a lesson.

Most links show up on the Links tab right away. Some sites, like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, hide their page details, so we can't check the link automatically. Those wait for a quick review before they appear.

Remove a lesson

You can remove a lesson you added. Moderators and admins can remove any lesson. Either way, it's removed from the Woodshed for everyone.

  • YouTube lessons: open the lesson and click Delete.
  • Links: click the trash button in the top-left corner of the link's card on the Links tab.
