The performance doc page

A chart with lyrics and chords alongside a video, ready to play along with.

The performance doc page is a song's chart: chords and lyrics (or a tab, lead sheet or sheet music) with the song's video or audio beside it, so you can read and play along at the same time. Anyone can open one, no account needed.

On a computer the chart is on the left and the media on the right. On a phone the chart comes first and the media panel is below it.

The chart

The header shows the song title (click it for the song page), the artist, the chart type and version (for example Charts · v2), and the key.

Above a typed chart:

  • Chords: shows a diagram for every chord in the chart. Use ‹ › on a diagram to see other fingerings.
  • Transpose: − and + move every chord down or up a half step. ♯ switches between sharps and flats.
  • Print chart: opens a clean, printable version in a new tab.
  • Edit: only if you made the chart (or you're a moderator).

Hover over any chord in the chart (or tap it on a phone) to see its diagram.

Tip: Transposing changes the chart only for you. Signed in, with the song in your collection, your setting is saved to your collection for that chart. Otherwise it's remembered in this browser.

Auto-scroll

The Auto-scroll bar at the top scrolls the chart for you, so your hands stay on your instrument.

  • starts and pauses. The space bar does the same.
  • Speed goes from 1 (slow) to 10 (fast). You can change it while it's scrolling.
  • « jumps back to the top.
  • Scroll by hand at any time. Auto-scroll carries on from wherever you land.
  • × hides the bar. Click Auto-scroll to bring it back.

Play along with the media panel

The Media panel plays the song's YouTube video, audio, Spotify link or MIDI file. If there's more than one, pick from Choose Audio/Video.

For YouTube, audio and video, click Show controls for practice tools:

  • Skip back / Skip forward by 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds.
  • Mark A, then Mark B, then Loop to repeat a tricky section. Go to A jumps back to the start of it, and Clear removes the marks.
  • Playback speed from 0.25× to 2×. Slow it down to learn a part, then bring it back up.

Signed in, if the song has no YouTube video yet, you'll see Find YouTube video, which looks one up and adds it to the song.

Other charts for the same song

If a song has more than one chart (a different arrangement, a bass tab, lyrics only), use Switch Document to move between them. Document Info shows the chart's type, version, who made it and when.

Charts can also be an image, a PDF, or a Google Doc. Google Docs always show the latest version, with a link to open the original.

Save the song or take it further

  • Add to my list (or Add to my collection when you're signed in) saves the song. See Collecting songs.
  • Add to my bands adds it to a band's repertoire. You'll need to sign in and be in a band.
  • Record this song records a take for your personal collection. See Recording songs in your profile.

Make your own version

Charts aren't edited by suggestion. If a chart isn't quite how you play it (a wrong chord, a different arrangement, your own voicings), make your own version. It sits alongside the original, and both show up in Switch Document.

In the Document Info panel:

  • Improve this chart starts from a copy of this one, so you only change what's different.
  • Make a new version starts from a blank chart of the same type.

You need to be signed in. Saving creates a new chart under your name, and the original stays as it was. If you made the chart yourself, you'll see Edit this chart instead.

Note: Whichever chart was opened most recently is the one the song opens to by default.

Playing with a band? A band's charts open inside the band, where you can choose which chart goes on the Music Stand.
