You don't need a band to record. Any song in your personal song collection can have your own audio or video takes, for practicing, demos, or tracking your progress on a tune.
These takes belong to you, not a band. To record a take for your band's repertoire, see Recording songs.
Start a recording
There are three ways in:
- From a song in your collection: open the song from your profile and use the Record This Song panel. Choose Record Audio or Record Video.
- Record a Song: from your profile's song collection or My Song Recordings, click Choose a song (or go to
/profile/quick-record). Filter the list, pick a song, and you're taken to it, ready to record. - From any song page in the catalog: click Record this song. The song is added to your collection first. If you're not signed in, you'll be asked to sign up or sign in, then taken to the song.
Your browser asks for permission to use your microphone (and camera, for video). The recording widget shows a timer while you play. Click Stop when you're done, then upload the take. See Recording a set for how the recorder works, including tips for a good recording.
Import a recording
Already recorded it somewhere else? On the song, click Import Recording in the Record This Song panel to upload an audio or video file.
My Song Recordings
All your takes are listed on My Song Recordings (/profile/song-recordings), newest first, with the song, take name, audio or video, length, size and date. Use the Song Collection dropdown to show only one song's takes.
Working with a take
Open a take to play it. The Actions panel has:
- Trim Recording: keep just the part you want. Trimming makes a trimmed copy; on a trimmed take the button reads Re-trim from original, so you can always start over from the full recording.
- Amplify: make a quiet audio take louder. You can preview it first. It isn't available for video.
- Add to media library: for video takes, save the clip to your media library.
- Delete Recording: deletes the take permanently.
Video takes also have a thumbnail panel, so you can pick the still image shown before the video plays.
The This song panel lists every take you've made of the same song, so you can compare them.
Share a take
Click Share to copy a private link to the take. Anyone with the link can play it without an account. That's handy for sending a demo to a bandmate or teacher. People without the link can't see your takes.
Add a take to the song
Add to song links (the rocket button) adds your take to the song's links on its public page, where other musicians and bands that play the song can hear it. Once it's added, the take shows Added to song.
Storage
Takes count toward your storage. If you're over your quota, recording is blocked until you delete old files or upgrade your plan. Recording Management (/profile/recordings) shows your usage and all your recordings in one place. See Storage.
