Musician identity (artist)

Linking yourself to your artist name so your songs count as member songs, not covers, in your bands.

Every song in the song library is credited to an artist. Music identity tells The Band Plan which of those artists is you, such as your solo project or the name you write under. In every band you belong to, songs credited to your artist then count as member songs, not covers.

Your band has its own link for the band's name. See Band identity.

Why it matters

Once you've linked your artist, in each of your bands:

  • The band's home page lists your songs on the Songs by members tab, in a section under your name, not under Covers.
  • Manage songs shows them under the Member artists filter.
  • Covers we play on the band's public page and in its press pack leaves them out.

A song credited to the band itself counts as a band song, even if it's also credited to you. In the setlist editor, the Written by this band filter only looks at the band's own link, so your songs show under Not by this band.

Linking doesn't change your song collection, and it doesn't show on your public profile.

  1. On your profile, click Music identity in the header.
  2. Under Search artists to link, type at least 2 letters of the name and click Search.
  3. Click Link next to the right artist.

The artist appears under Linked artists, and shows Linked in search results. Click Unlink to remove it. Only you can change your own links.

You can link up to 3 artists, for example a solo name and an old duo. To link a different one once you've reached 3, unlink one first.

Changing your username doesn't break the links.

If your artist isn't found

Search only finds artists already in the song library, and shows up to 40 matches, so type more of the name if you don't see yours. An artist is added to the library when someone adds a song by them. To add yourself, add one of your songs (to your collection or a band) and type your artist name as the artist. Then search again and link it.

Linked automatically

Signing up never links an artist; you choose your links here. The one exception is changing your username on Edit Profile: The Band Plan then looks for an artist with exactly the same name as your new username, ignoring capitals and extra spaces. If it finds exactly one, it links it and tells you which artist. If several match, nothing is linked and you'll see a note asking you to pick the right one under Music identity. If you already have 3 links, nothing is linked.

If an automatic link is wrong, for example your new username happens to match a well-known artist, click Unlink. It won't be linked again unless you change your username to that name again.

Songs credited to the wrong artist

If one of your songs still counts as a cover, check the artist on the song. It may be spelled differently from the artist you linked. Either fix the song's artist (see Editing library songs) or link that spelling as well.
